The foundation fosters path-breaking scientific discovery, environmental conservation, improvements in patient care, and preservation of the special character of the San Francisco, CA, Bay Area. There are significant problems facing the world today and more will arise in the future. Many problems are of a scope and complexity too large for the foundation to take head on. The foundation's funding strategies are guided by a rigorous assessment, which evaluates whether its capacity and resources can be significant factors in bringing about measurable, durable solutions.
